MU251 Fundamentals of MIDI and Software Synthesis I

Fall 2008

Project 1

General Requirements:

Create a four to six minute composition which is an audio sequence that is based on the samples submitted from Lab Assignment 1.

A folder has been placed in the MU251 user profile where you save your files called “SamplesForProj1”. This folder contains all of the samples submitted from lab assignment 1. They are numbered consecutively starting with 01, 02, 03 etc… You must choose at least one sample from each set of five. 01-05, 06-10, 11-15 etc…. In this manner you will be using at least one sample from every student that turned in lab assignment 1. You may choose more than one sample from these sets of five samples.

You are to arrange your chosen samples into a sequence (series of events) that will demonstrate your proficiency on assembling audio samples in Sonar.

You can draw on material from your understand of music and apply some of the principles that you hear commonly in music to enhance your sequence. Among these events may be repetitions and change (main material and bridge). However your sequence cannot be the same thing continuously repeated over and over. Repetition does not necessarily mean the exact same thing, it repetition of the source material but you should vary this material during the course of your repetitions.

Your project must include:

  • Panning in each track (controller 10)
  • A gradual change in volume on multiple samples. This should be evident aurally.
  • You should include the use of reversed audio clips in at least two clips.
  • Include at least two samples that loop. However, you cannot loop a sample for more than 20 seconds. However, you may use it more than once. You should choose a sample that is not over 10 seconds.
  • One sample must include at least two changes in project pitch. You will need to set up the sample to recognize project pitch and set markers for project pitch.
  • You must have at least two grove clips that have at least two pitch envelope transpositions.
  • You should apply various types of routines (plug-ins) to your audio samples in order to generate interest in your sequence. (FxChorus, FxDelay, StectrFx etc…)

You will need to turn in:

  • An audio CD of your work, each section must be a separate track
  • A Data CD of your Sonar files and the audio files,
  • A one half page typed paper of your methods and how fulfilled the requirements.
  • Due Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. We will listen to the projects in class.
